In this webinar we aim to shed light on Generative AI – a rapidly expanding form of AI – from both a legal and knowledge-based perspective, to understand what separates it from Artificial General Intelligence, what impact it is having in our industry to date from a legal, technical and commercial industry perspective, and how it may shape the professional lives of photographers, image-makers and those working alongside.

Welcoming five special guests, we start with taking a 101 tour of Generative AI, looking at the legal framework in relation to copyright  and database rights, plus from a technical perspective looking at how generative AI works using datasets and machine learning.

We then take a deep dive into what’s currently happening in this rapidly changing  development. Our industry experts in their field of AI-development, copyright law, commissioning and photography, will be sharing their insights and experience.

Guest Speakers:

Anna Skurczynska – Anna Skurczyńska, Founder Director of Open Plan Law, has a broad practice across all areas of Intellectual Property (IP) but with a particular focus on digital copyright and data law. She advises clients from start-ups to multi-national corporations on exploitation and protection of intellectual property assets. In addition to her legal practice, Anna lectures on Media Law and Ethics at the University of the Arts.

Claire Arroyo – Claire Arroyo, Art Buying Photographic Consultancy, has been working in the photographic industry for the past 25 years. After graduating from Kent Institute of Art Design, she pursued a career in photographic management; from picture libraries, corporate photo libraries to art buyer for global brand and marketing agencies. Since establishing her own business in 2008 she has been working directly with global brands providing consultancy services in strengthening their branding and campaigns through curating imagery, improving procurement practices and managing their impactful visual assets. Kino – Hermeilio Miguel Aquino (Kino) is a creative director & fashion photographer. He is a creative partner at Defiant, a creative agency based in London. His career began as a creative lead working across design, photography, and film production across several agencies, studios, and brands. Previous clients include Jaguar Land Rover, Russell & Bromley, Air Jordan, Semrush, Deliciously Ella, Yoto, Lenovo, Sony Music, Warner Music, Zippo, World Bank, Waterbear Network, Soho House, Tony Blair Foundation, Proctor, & Gamble and M&C Saatchi. His photography work has appeared in both Vogue, & Harper Baazar. Kino recently won the Life Framer Youth Competition, shortlisted for the Life Framer series award and won the African American Marketing Association Creative on the Rise award in 2022. Mark Milstein – Mark Milstein, Rainmaker – Co-Founder of vAIsual, brings unique insights into global content operations and the licensed stock media landscape that few can match. War photographer, founder of Eastern Europe’s first internet-based photo agency and founder of Microstocksolutions, a global services company supporting the visual media industry, Mark now directs both vAIsual’s strategic partnership and fundraising efforts along with its daily operations.

vAIsual is a technology company pioneering legally clean generative AI algorithms and solutions. vAIsual was first formed in 2020 by Michael Osterrieder and Nicolas Menijes, soon to be joined by industry veterans Mark Milstein and Istvan Novak. All founders are well connected to the IP licensing industry. Our technological understanding and legal knowledge led quickly to our first proprietary generative AI solution.

Nick Dunmur – Nick Dunmur, Head of Business & Legal, The AOP, has been a professional photographer all his working life. He spent 6 years as a non-executive director of the AOP Board, two years of which as Chair. Nick has been involved with various working groups and committees concerned with copyright and photographers’ rights at the AOP and other organisations including the British Copyright Council (BCC) and the British Photographic Council (BPC). Picking up the reins from Gwen Thomas, Nick provides business and legal advice to our members on matters relating to professional practice, licensing, issues with copyright and infringements. This service is free to AOP Photographer members. As a practicing photographer of commissioned and personal work, Nick is ideally placed to look at problems from a photographer’s perspective.
