2023 Emerging Talent Award | AOP Project

Celebrating the very best in the new wave of photographers and image makers, who have been practicing their craft for less than 3 years.

For this annual special AOP Project there are no restrictions on what photographers and image makers can enter. We simply want to see their most amazing work. Entries were accepted as  Stills, Moving Image and / or Innovation.

“With our Emerging Talent Award, it’s always a delight and welcome surprise to see the selections chosen by our incredible judges from Mother London. This year’s winners and finalists have a much more commercial expression to their work, in addition to having strong feminine narratives for many of the finalists’ submissions, all of which is positive to see. I very much look forward to watching their professional careers flourish.

We should also say thank you, not only to Kate Congreve and Bertie Gulliver, from Mother London, for choosing this year’s amazing selection of winners and finalists, but also a huge thank you to Squintbox and Fujifilm who are both providing prizes to our 2023 Gold winner, giving further support to their emerging professional career.”

AND THE WINNERS ARE:

Gold Winner - Bethany Crutchfield

Evening Dream.

Above the classic, recognisable beauty of Chanel No. 5, movement, texture, light and colour are tentatively layered – combining to surround and embrace the delicate vial. Below, the natural beauty of water and the manufactured elegance of plastic create a hazy, yet crystalline depth. Together, these elements produce an image of dream-like opulence – a vibrant fantasy as lavish as the famous scent itself.

“I am really excited and grateful to be chosen by the judges for the Emerging Talent Award, and incredibly pleased that my work will be shown and printed by the AOP. As a photographer still in the early part of my career, this award represents an amazing opportunity not just for recognition, but to further develop my practice. I am confident that this award will lead to new opportunities and am excited to see what my next steps will now be. My thanks to the jurors, and my congratulations to all other winning artists!”

Mother Nature

This image is called “Mother Nature” this is a fashion editorial piece which explores womenhood and the beauty and strength that comes with this. I wanted to use nature to combine women with the earth as they are creators which deserves to be celebrated.

Unseen

As a disabled, genderqueer photographer I know what it’s like to feel unseen in this world, so this is a very personal project. This ongoing series aims to challenge the narrative on how disabled people are viewed, confronting the ableism that permeates our society and flipping the script on what disability ‘looks like’ by intentionally including those with invisible disabilities. Inspired by classical statues this series celebrates disabled bodies as worthy of art instead of pity. The plastic sheet acts as a double metaphor – how society doesn’t see disabled people and as a reminder that you can’t always tell if someone is disabled by looking at them
