Leica Open Project Winners

Brief:THE WORLD DESERVES WITNESSES

Interpreting the theme – The world Deserves Witnesses entrants were invited to contribute to our collective imagination by submitting work that documents the beauty and poetry of the world, and celebrate those capturing pivotal moments of history, or the fragility of our human condition through their own sensitivity and unique view.

Jason Heward, Managing Director Leica Camera UK who selected our winning entries said “It was great to partner with AOP on the Open Project. We received many entries that really resonated with the theme of photographers being our ‘witness to the world’. Even with a strong field, our winner Danny Burrows really stood out as someone who captured the sensitivity and intimacy of a moment.”

We extend our congratulations to our Winners and Runners up who are;

GOLD Award Winner: Danny Burrows

© Danny Burrows – Mime and daughters at the Bruderhof baptism spring, Sannerz, Germany.

This image is from a long term project entitled ‘Together (A)Part’ which documents the Bruderhof community and what they describe as “another life”. Through portraiture, documentary storytelling and visual metaphors the project examines the liminal space between living TOGETHER as a closed religious community but bound to their neighbours by a spiritual commitment to “god and humankind”, and, APART from external society because of their rejection of personal property, technologies, public education and money and commitment to a life of non-violence.

‘I am so excited to have done so well in your competition and really can’t quite believe it. Leica and AOP are brands that I have so much respect for because of their commitment to photography and its community.’

SILVER Award Winner: Jonny Seymour

© Jonny Seymour – Pensive man in a Ghat.

‘I was working on a project titled “bathing in the Ganges” i was documenting the lives of people who use the facilities daily and captured this beautiful moment.’ Jonny’s photography was also taken as part of a bigger long-term project documenting the lives of people who use the Ganges as a community hub for bathing, socialising, gambling, grooming and more.

“I’m a Documentary / Portrait photographer that enjoys documenting people from all walks of life, all around the world. I’ve worked in Advertising / Art for the last 13 years and bring all my knowledge from those worlds into this one. I took this image as part of a bigger project I have worked on for numerous years documenting the lives of people who use the Ganges. Spend an hour there and you will be immediately fascinated with what seems like a different world.”

Project description

Brief:THE WORLD DESERVES WITNESSES

Since 1914, when the company invented the first 35mm camera, Leica has designed and manufactured precision optical instruments which have become iconic thanks both to their timeless design and for having been the camera of choice of the greatest masters of the 20th century, whose pictures have recorded the milestones of our modern history. All these images, together with those shot into the 21st century, belong now to our collective imagination.

Leica, the legendary German maker of photographic devices whose roots go back in time of more than 150 years, is celebrating the commitment of photographers who bear witness to the world. Through THE WORLD DESERVES WITNESSES, we would like you to present us with work that documents the beauty and poetry of the world, and celebrate those captured pivotal moments of history, or the fragility of our human condition through your own sensitivity and unique view.

“Let us all together be witnesses for all the facets of our common world!”
Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, Chairman of the Supervisory Board and majority shareholder of Leica Camera AG.
